As an exuberant, flamboyant self-acclaimed flapper, seventeen year old Evie O’Neill’s boisterous personality proves to be too large for the conservative town of Ohio. After the performance of an offensive party trick, her parents ship secretly excited Evie to New York City to stay with her Uncle Will. Evie, young and fashionable, quickly fits in with the hustle a bustle of New York City, making friends and attending the finest performances and speak-easies. However, it is not all fun and games. When murders mysteriously being to occur throughout town, Evie and her Uncle begin working adamantly to try and solve the gruesome murders. Can the reason Evie got kicked out of Ohio help solve the murders? Memphis Campbell This seventeen year old numbers runner knows all the ins and outs of Harlem. Through a difficult family past, Memphis makes a personal pledge to do everything to keep his younger brother, Isaiah, safe. This Harlem hustler also has a soft side, spending long nights sitting in a graveyard, writing poetry. Memphis’ beautiful prose and breathtaking smile is enough to melt any girl’s heart. However, Memphis has a dark past and begins to have mysterious reoccurring dreams. Could these dreams signify something evil arising? Sam Lloyd Sam is a smooth-talking resident of Manhattan that Evie meets when she first arrives. While he makes several attempts to steal her heart, he is more concerned with with stealing money via pick-pocketing. Due to his special ability, Sam makes this task look easy. While he may seem like a crook and a low-life, Sam just may have a reason for his thieving ways that could redeem him. Jerhico Jerhico can be seen as the gentle giant type. He works as an assistant Uncle Will at the museum and secretly crushes on Evie. Evie doesn't seem to return these feelings, but Mabel has the hots for him. Jerhico openly expresses his hatred for Sam due to the fact that he's jealous because Sam is always flirting with Evie. Much like the other characters in the novel, Jerhico has a secret that he keeps from everyone else. Henry Henry is the brother to Theta, although they aren't related. He is the one that takes care of Theta when she arrives to the city. Henry is the musical type and writes tunes for for shows. However, he grow tired of the job and claims it's too easy. Mabel Rose Mabel is the daughter of some of New Yorks biggest political activist, and best friend of Miss Evie O’Neil. She is not your typical New York 1920’s flapper girl, often dressed in out of style close and as Evie puts it dire need of a haircut, but nonetheless she is an amazing person and friend to Evie. While she can sometimes be overshadowed by the spotlight, there are big things waiting for this girl. One of them she is hoping to be Jericho Jones who she is simply gaga for. Theta Knight Theta Knight is the real deal New York City flapper and a star dancer Ziegfeld girl! For Evie, Thetas life of dancing on stage, late night parties, and suitors lined up around the block is the perfect life, but for Theta it’s a bore. This street smart, fast talking girl is looking for something more in life, which she just might find in a certain Harlem poet. Uncle Will Knowledgeable and reserved, William Fitzgerald is a professor and curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult, also known as the Museum of Creepy Crawlies. Despite his “bachelor ways”, Will graciously takes in Evie after being kicked out from Ohio. Through his intelligence, he works with Evie in hopes of solving the murders around town. |
