PROJECTS
OBITUARY
Write an obituary for one of the characters murdered by Naughty John in the novel. Use details and descriptions given from the novel to make it accurate for the obituary. Then elaborate by making inferences about the character and what their family or friends would have written in their obituary. Once you have individually written an obituary you will work in a group to make a obituary page for a newspaper in the 1920's using adds of that time and pictures of your characters. BODY BIOGRAPHY Take a character from the novel and draw a body biography of them. First you will draw a picture of your character then add objects that are significant to your character on the body parts that collaborate with it. For example Hermoine Granger is a logical person so i would draw a book next to her head, and Harry Potter loves Quiditch so i would draw a broomstick in his hand. You need at least five objects that represent your character and three significant quotes. |
CREATE YOUR OWN DIVINER
Create your own diviner and insert this character into the story. Write an alternate ending or an alternate version of a section of the story that involves your character. Be sure to include a back story that explains how your character discovered his or her power and how t his character arrived to Manhattan. Page length: 3-5 pages. Please take spelling, grammar usage, and punctuation into consideration as it will effect your grade.
CREATE YOUR OWN SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE
In a group, create a scene where your group participates in a supernatural experience. This could include a scene similar to the beginning of the novel where the teenagers at the party play with a Ouija Board. Another example could be having one member of your group demonstrating their diviner ability like Evie does when she uses one's personal item to reveal their secrets.
SPLIT OPEN MIND ACTIVITY
Chose a character from the novel and create a split open mind exemplifying how they had developed from the beginning of the novel to the end of the novel. On the left side, draw symbols and write words illustrating the characters appearance and personality at the beginning of the novel. On the right side, draw symbols and write words illustrating the characters appearance and personality at the end of the novel. For example, Jay Gatsby from "The Great Gatsby". At the beginning of the novel, Jay Gatsby is mysterious and is rumored to have committed murders, yet he throws lavish parties. So, on the left side you could draw a question mark (representing he is mysterious), some type of weapon (representing his rumored murders), and balloons (representing the parties he throws). As the novel proceeds, we discover Jay Gatsby is passionate and loyal. So, on the right side you could draw a heart (representing he is passionate) and a dog (representing his loyalty).

CREATE YOUR OWN TELEVISION SHOW
In a group, create a show episode from a television show using the character from the novel. This needs to be classroom appropriate. You will need to dress as your character would dress (if one of you characters was Jay Gatsby you would wear a suit) and you will need to portray your characters personality (Jay Gatsby would be very proper and use proper English, while Myrtle Wilson would dress more run down and use slang). For example, for "The Great Gatsby" you could do an episode of Jerry Springer. Daisy could come onto the show to admit her affair with Jay. All the characters would be there and you would need to act the way you character would act in the novel. Tom would act like a coldhearted bully and Jay would act calm and passionate.
